It was all meant as a playful joke, but some restaurant-goers are fuming mad.

Mildred’s Temple Kitchen sent out an invitation for Valentine’s Day for customers to have sex in their unisex stalls:

“Have you given any thought to moving beyond the bedroom?

“Check out Mildred’s Sexy Bathrooms throughout the weekend of Big Love. You get the picture.”

The restaurant proudly has a copy of the Kama Sutra available in the washroom, as well as furry handcuffs, and such aphrodisiac menu items such as chef Tyler Cunningham’s fresh oysters with tapioca pearls and Lady-And-The-Tramp spaghetti and meatballs, served from one plate.

“We’ve always had little trysts in our bathrooms,” says chef/co-owner Donna Dooher, pointing to lingering weekday lunches as a popular time. “We’re taking it to the next level on Valentine’s weekend.”

So, is it illegal?

No, say the Toronto police.  It is perfectly legal to have sex in a public washroom so long as the people involved are consenting adults.

Now the owners, under fire from the public, have released a statement:

“We were just having a bit of fun and being playful,” says Mildred co-owner Donna Dooher.

“The world is a pretty stressed place.”

After garnishing worldwide attention from celebrity bloggers and news outlets, co-owner Dooher felt she needed to clarify: “They all think we’re urging customers to have sex in our bathrooms,” she says. “All we were trying to do was spark a little spontaneity.”

This author believes there’s nothing wrong with that.  Had I happened upon a couple having sex in the bathroom at any restaurant though, I think I would only be horrified if my 5 year old was in tow.  Needless to say, I won’t be bringing my children to Mildred’s Temple Kitchen.  My husband on the other hand…
